Killzone 2

Hope or Hype?

With the incredible success of the Halo franchise on X-box the FPS genre on the Playstation platform has undergone more scrutiny than almost any other type of game. Sony may have just brought us a compelling case against the widespread doubts with its new ambition FPS title, Killzone 2.

The flashy trailer shown during the E3 convention in 2005 seemed so promising, only to be criticized as another CG into that wasn't all that indicative of the actual game play. The doubts continued to grow into this years E3 convention and even appeared reasonable as we compared nearly identical trailer screen shots from 2005 to 2007. Moreover, leaked screen shots and emerging internet based previews seemed to support the general pessimism surrounding the game.

This year's E3 footage however is of the actual game, and it shows that Guerilla has comemuch close to the original trailer than expected. With incredible poligonal details, Killzone 2 really shows off the PS3's graphical capabilities. Interactivity is also worth noting, its war torn city is littered with destructible objects along with impressive numbers of enemies to really capture that battlefield atmosphere. The lighting, both real time and pre-cached, deliver an ultra smooth very impressive environment.

Based off this demo, Killzone 2 seems just the contender to challenge X-box's dominance in the FPS genre.
