Halo 3 marketing has officially reached awesome levels with the announcement of a new Mountain Dew soda specifically for the games release. The obvious Burger King soda and fries containers are being printed and General Motors is even featuring the game in an ad for their new G6 GXP Street model. Pepsi Co. however is taking things to the next level with the creation of a new drink called Mountain Dew Gamer Fuel.
The drink is regular Mountain Dew with added cherry flavoring that results in a redish / pink color. The cool part however is that the soda contains 30% more caffeine than regular Dew, which was already known for having more caffeine than it's competition. Mountain Dew already appeals to a younger more active crowd and is extremely popular amongst video gamers in particular. Their plan is to release the new drink for a 12 week period starting in mid August and "create a sense of scarcity of the product tied to the Halo 3 launch."
They view the new drink as a way to deepen their brands connection with gamers. You might notice it is called "gamer fuel" and not something that mentions Halo 3 directly. Obviously if the sales are good they will begin slapping new game graphics on the bottle for every major release that gives them sponsorship dollars. I think they will be quite successfull with this plan. Selling stimulants to gamers is pretty much a no-brainer.
