Wii Fit Sells 1 Mill in Japan

Tracks body mass index online

I'm excited about Wii Fit because I've always had horrible flexibility and I consider taking yoga classes pretty much out of the question. The game was launched in Japan and has already sold 1 million copies in it's first month. This is very impressive for a game that requires a higher than average expenditure due to the peripheral that is required; the Wii Balance Board. Apparently in addition to having tons of exercise routines to go through the game also tracks users BMI (body mass index) and various other fitness related stats on a new Wii channel. These type of statistics are exactly what will drive people like myself to become truely fit.

I remember when my roomates and I discovered all the stats the Nintendo Gamecube stored in Smash Melee. We are stat obsessed. We had insane competition after we realized the win / loss % was saved and analyzed data on our memory card ten times more than anything related to our class work. The fitness information that will be recorded by Wii Fit is even going to be available online, so if you are progressively getting into better and better shape you will receive encouragement from your friends.

Imagine if other games could link in with Wii Fit and your general fitness level could impact things like your run speed or your stamina? If the BMI of you in real life is recorded and stored online why not translate it into an MMORPG where everyone has avatars with their real life body type? This would turn an MMO into a dating service, which would be amazing for it's popularity. I can just see a guild that is L33T and doing end game raids that requires their members to work out 2 hours a day to maintain peak physical conditioning.

Will Wii Fit do as well in the US as it has in Japan? Perhaps it will do better! We do have the reputation for being fatter after all, so we need it more.
